Automated teller machine

In 1960 Luther George Simjian invented an automated deposit machine (accepting coins, cash and cheques) although it did not have cash dispensing features.

First automatic teller machine was invented by John Shepherd-Barron, Managing Director at banknote manufacturer De La Rue.

The DACS ( De La Rue Automatic Cash System) machines used cheque-like tokens, which had been impregnated with a radioactive compound of carbon-14 and matched against the personal identification number (PIN) entered on a keypad.

A first cash machine was put into use by Barclays Bank in North London, machine only dispensed £1 notes and permitted users to withdraw up to value £10 at a time.

America’s first automatic teller machine (ATM) makes its public debut on September 2, 1969, dispensing cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville Centre, New York.

The ATM that debuted in New York in 1969 was only able to give out cash, but in 1971, an ATM that could handle multiple functions.

The UK’s first “drive through” cash machine was opened by Barclays on 22 May 1998 at Hatton Cross, near Heathrow Airport.
