A type of cable transportation used for mass transit.
The cable technology was used before but was was closed and rebuilt, reopening with steam locomotives.
Andrew Smith Hallidie tested the first cable car on San Francisco's Clay Street  on August 2, 1873. The Clay Street line started regular service on September 1, 1873
Today, San Francisco's cable cars are one of two National Historic Streetcar Landmarks in operation (New Orleans’ St. Charles streetcar line is the other).
Several cities operate a modern version of the cable car system.
