Lincoln Memorial
Basic information
It honors Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States
The memorial was built between 1914 and 1922, and the theme of the building represents the Union. Designed by Henry Bacon.
It was designed after the Parthenon, the Greek temple in Athens. The 36 columns on the outside walls stand for the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. The names of the 48 states in the Union when the memorial was completed are carved along the outside of the memorial. Alaska and Hawaii are acknowledged with a plaque on the plaza.There are 58 steps leading up to the Lincoln Memorial, 2 for the number of terms he served as President, and 56 for his age when he was assassinated. The memorial itself is 190 feet long and 119 feet wide, and reaches a height of almost 100 feet.
Inside the Lincoln Memorial is the iconic seated sculpture of Lincoln. The statue was designed by Daniel Chester French
