Oktoberfest
Basic information
Oktoberfest began as a wedding celebration when Bavaria's Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen.
It began on October 12, 1810 and ended on October 17 with a horse race. The tradition of horse races ended in 1960.
Beer and food stalls were only added in 1818, eight years after the first celebration took place
Featuring a beer festival and a travelling carnival. Large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed.
Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The Oktoberfest grounds span a 100-acre swath of land to the west of the city, and is still held on the same site where the original festival was held in 1810.
It is a 16- to 18-day folk festival running from mid- or late-September to around the first Sunday in October. Originally took place in the 16-day period leading up to the first Sunday in October.
Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations.
The first Oktoberfest, USA, was held on October 13, 14, and 15, 1961- festival in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Cincinnati’s Oktoberfest (officially titled Oktoberfest Zinzinnati) began in 1976.
