On 5 June 1883, the first Express d'Orient left Paris for Vienna
On October 4th, 1883, forty passengers on board started their great trip across the Europe. The round trip lasted 7 days.
The original route, was from Paris, Gare de l'Est, to Giurgiu in Romania across Europe through Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest before arriving in Istanbul
Created in 1883 by the Belgian company Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL)
Operated until 2009
Since 13 December 2021, an ÖBB Nightjet again runs three times per week on the Paris-Vienna route, not branded as Orient Express
The Orient-Express was discontinued in 1977, an American, James Sherwood bought several dilapidated carriages at an auction and in 1982 revived the train as the Venice Simplon Orient-Express, with
several routes between London and Venice. So some of original carriages to form the Venice Simplon-Orient Express that still operates today.
The luxurious dining car, where scenes for Murder on the Orient Express and other films were filmed, is now in the OSE museum of Thessaloniki.
