Basic information
Container Corporation of America (CCA), a paperboard company, sponsored a nationwide art contest looking for a design that would help identify the company's recycled products.
Designed in 1970 by student at the University of Southern California, Gary Dean Anderson. He based his inspiration for the cyclical recycling symbol on the Mobius Strip, which is associated with the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' slogan.
The symbol is not trademarked and is in the public domain, so anyone may use or modify the recycling symbol.
