Description
British luxury passenger liner that sank

Laid down on : 31 March 1909, launched : 31 May 1911, completed : 2 April 1912, maiden voyage started : 10 April 1912

British passenger liner, sank after striking an iceberg on voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York City. It hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm ship's time. At 2:20 am, the ship broke apart and foundered, with well over one thousand people still aboard. The Carpathia arrived in the area at approximately 3:30 AM, more than an hour after the Titanic sank.

One of the deadliest sinking for a single ship up to that time, wher more than 1,500 passangers died of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard.

The Titanic was one of the largest and most opulent ships in the world and the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line.

It was approximately 882.5 feet (269 metres) long and about 92.5 feet (28.2 metres) wide at its widest point.

The wreck of Titanic was discovered in 1985.

The final survivor of the sinking, Millvina Dean, aged two months at the time, died in 2009 at the age of 97; there are no survivors of the Titanic that are still alive today.

It has been the inspiration of fiction and non-fiction, the most financially successful by far has been James Cameron's Titanic (1997), which became the highest-grossing film in history up to that time.
