The European Grand Prix championships were already in 1920s and 1930s but in 1946 FIA ( Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile's) standardisated set of rules that all participants and cars must meet.
This was originally known as Formula A.
The first Formula1 Gran Prix was in Silverstone, England in 1950. The first champion was Giuseppe Farina. 
A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, which take place worldwide.
Grands Prix are frequently named after the country, region or city in which they are raced
