Tupac Shakur was one of the most influential and acclaimed hip-hop artists of his era. Born on June 16, 1971 in East Harlem, New York, he was the son of two Black Panther Party members and his name was taken from the legendary Incan chief, Túpac Amaru II. Tupac's mother was a former Black Panther, and his father was a prominent Black Panther leader and founder of the Black Panther Party's New York chapter.

Tupac attended the Baltimore School of the Arts, where he studied acting, poetry and ballet. His musical career began when he joined the rap group Digital Underground in 1991. His solo career began in 1991 with the release of his debut album, 2Pacalypse Now. The album was a critical and commercial success, earning Tupac two Grammy nominations.

Throughout his career, Tupac released over four studio albums and a number of multi-platinum singles, including "California Love," "Dear Mama," and "Hit 'Em Up." He was also a highly successful actor, appearing in several feature films, including Juice, Poetic Justice, and Above the Rim.

In 1996, Tupac was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. His death shocked the hip hop community and sparked a tremendous outpouring of grief and mourning.
